Default Regperf.exe

Hey,

Anytime I visit the internet or start GW I get a pop-up from norman that says something about REGPERF.EXE. I started looking up what it is and the internet says it's spyware. I never had any kind of spyware before and I'm scared that this may infect my Game or even worse my whole computer. I hope you guys can help me with this or maybe post some links to free spyware scanners or something.

Thanks in advance!

~Boy.

Google "Spybot: Search and Destroy"

One of the better spyware scanners I've seen to date. Just be careful; it'll sometimes find things "wrong" with your system that you've actually set up. For instance, I overrode a Windows security feature that prevents other users from getting onto your computer because I'm the only one that uses it, and Spybot caught it as a threat. So I just told it not to fix the "problem."

There are some other good scanners out there as well, I think HiJackThis is another one, but that could be a virus scanner; I'm not sure.

After research, turns out this could in fact be a very harmful program if left alone. See the end of the post for more info

My recommendation: Don't panic, but download Spybot asap, run it, have it fix the problems it finds (it almost always finds questionable cookies, at least) and your problem should be solved. If it's not, then check out google for another spyware scanner to see if it finds anything.

EDIT: I did some research, and the following web pages may be of use to you. Turns out that the program is part of a trojan called Zlob.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...9070309AAvds0H
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/trojzlobij.html
http://www.virusbuster.hu/en/virusla...ptions/zlob.uy

Anyway, download Spybot, see if it finds spyware, tell it to fix the problem, and then see if the problem persists. Also, MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE to run a virus scan with whatever scanner you have. If the problem persists, download another free scanner. HijackThis is a good one, and there are some listed on those pages.

If you do have problems with this trojan, follow the advice from one of the internet security advice forums, such as Castle Cops, go to thier orums search, and type in Regperf.exe, and there will be a list of suggestions to help. It may be best just to post your HiJackThis report to the experts at CatleCops, or one of the dedicated Internet security forum sites.

I've found that if you do have Ad-Ware / Spyware problems you may need to use more then just one program. Certain programs find specific things better then others.

Here is the three (free/free for personal use) ad-ware / software you can get:

Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition - http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-...bj=dl&tag=top5

Spybot Search and Destory -
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Searc...ml?tag=lst-0-1

Microsoft Windows Defender -
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

Basically install all three, and make sure there up to date.
Run one, let it clean (reboot if asked), then run the next program, etc.

If you find you have a partically nasty ad-ware / spyware, reboot your compuer in safe mode (hit ctrl when system is booting, then choose safe mode). Then scan using each one.

I have found a link to the Symantec web site, giving advice about this trojan
http://searchg.symantec.com/search?q... e=symc_en_US
and hope it helps, as there seems to be several versions of this nasty.
Many thanks for your advice RTS

Well, to be honest, if you never want spyware again AND because you're Dutch and it's only in Dutch at the moment: Hitmanpro.NL very easy AND efficient, uses over 10 anti spyware/virusses/trojan products ^^ Anyway, your problem is solved, but i really recommend you downloading hitmanpro I used it for 2 years, no problems at all, if i contact support or anything, you get replies in about 10 hours, which isnt long at all as they get about 1k mails per day!

Greetings,

Jessica
